What is contemporary Pilates?
Contemporary Pilates, as taught through the BASI method, builds on the original work of Joseph Pilates while integrating modern movement science and a more adaptable approach to the body. It is more than just exercise—it’s an intelligent, evolving practice designed to improve strength, mobility, and overall function.
At Sisu Pilates, we follow the BASI approach, which emphasizes balanced body development, thoughtful progression, and individualized programming. Rather than adhering to a fixed sequence, sessions are tailored to support your specific needs, goals, and movement patterns. With a focus on breath, alignment, control, and fluidity, each session encourages you to move with awareness and intention—on the mat and across all apparatus.
Private Mat Sessions
The Mat is the foundation of the method. Using your body weight, gravity, and thoughtfully chosen props, you learn to control each movement from your center. Props such as rings, balls, and bands provide both support and added challenge, helping to refine alignment and deepen your understanding of the work.
Private Apparatus Sessions
These sessions use specialized Pilates equipment to provide both support and resistance, enhancing movement and control. Our studio features premium Balanced Body apparatus, and within the BASI approach, each session is thoughtfully adapted to support alignment, build strength, and progress according to your individual needs.
The Reformer
A spring-based system with a moving carriage that builds strength, control, and alignment through dynamic, full-body movement.
The Wunda Chair
A compact apparatus with a spring-loaded pedal, designed to challenge strength, balance, and stability in functional positions.
The Spine Corrector
A supportive, curved apparatus that improves spinal mobility, alignment, and posture while strengthening and lengthening the body.
We offer three levels based on your body’s readiness and your mastery of the fundamental movements.
Building the foundation. You will learn proper breathing, alignment, and how to safely set up and use the apparatus, with a focus on foundational, supported movements.
Increasing the challenge. We introduce more complex exercises and focus more on the "flow"—the seamless transitions between movements that build stamina and deeper concentration.
The full expression of the work. These sessions integrate more complex, dynamic movement requiring higher levels of strength, balance, coordination, and full-body control.
